If it truely has no serial number there are legal problems with ownership as every S&W 38 Special that left the factory did so with a serial number. Does the gun have adjustable or fixed sights. The S&W Standard Catalog puts the serials 241704-700000 between 1915 and 1942. Not a lot of help. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact.
